Markham Fire Department

Markham is the fastest growing most ethnically diverse city in the region and I love the fact that the City and Fire Department, not only embraces inclusivity but also puts the work to the road to foster it. Recently, I was visiting the main headquarters and was visually fixated on these two young man named Alex and Dan, who I'm sure was wondering what I was looking at and both approached my Jeep. Being a fire fighter myself, I was very impressed with their poise, professionalism and how they represented the uniform. We engaged in conversation and they told me that they were successful candidates of the Humber College fire program that both the city and department sponsors. I can remember feeling so incredibly proud of their success and the fact that the city helped make it possible. I believe the proactive nature of inclusion was further reinforced after we disengaged our conversation with a feeling of mutual respect and I entered the building and had the door held open for me by a small group of female recruits. They were also friendly, professional and polite. I personally believe that if these are candidates representing the face, spirit and integrity of department, then the city did invest wisely. I wish them all good luck and Godspeed in they're future endeavors and I tip my hat to both the department and city.
